Forty-six percent of the women polled said they would rather go without sex for two weeks than give up access to the Internet for the same period of time, according to the survey, "Internet Reliance in Today's Economy." Only 30 percent of men said they would rather forgo intimate relations than cyber ones. Ninety-five percent of those surveyed said it is "very important, important or somewhat important" to be able to access the Internet. Sixty-five percent of those surveyed rated Internet access above other discretionary spending items such as cable television subscriptions (39 percent), dining out (20 percent), shopping for clothes (18 percent) or a health club membership (10 percent). Sixty-one percent of the women surveyed said they would rather give up watching television for two weeks than give up access to the Internet for one week. Harris Interactive and Intel said the survey was conducted November 18-20. They did not provide a margin of error for the results.

The Filipino Heroism

Filipinos are primarily descended from Malayan peoples who migrated to the islands thousands of years ago...
Filipinos or the Filipino people (feminine: Filipina) are citizens of the Philippines, an archipelago in Southeast Asia. The terms may also refer to people of Philippine descent, regardless of citizenship. There are now over 100 million ethnic Filipinos worldwide.
Colloquially, Filipinos may refer to themselves as Pinoy (feminine: Pinay), which is formed by taking the last four letters of Pilipino and adding the diminutive suffix -y.
Filipino-Americans have a long, storied history in the United States. Some of the first Asians in California, to those rising up in U.S. politics, Filipino Americans have had an influence on the United States. Farm worker's strikes, fights against oppressive legislation, and memorable community leaders have all shaped and will continue to shape the country.

Keep Off Holiday Stress
Posted by janean Friday, December 12, 2008 acne, dryness, holiday stress, prevention, stress symptoms, tired eyes 0 comments »Remember the last time you caught a glimpse of yourself in the mirror after a particularly harrowing day? Your skin probably didn’t look as smooth and glowing as it usually does (never mind the furrowed brow). The reason: Cortisol, a hormone your brain pumps out when you’re feeling stressed, literally gets under your skin and can make you break out, dry out, or just look tired and blah. Stay pretty all season with these tips:
STRESS SYMPTOM: ACNE
Stress increases the inflammation that leads to breakouts. To beat ’em, use a lotion containing skin-sloughing salicylic acid or bacteria-busting benzoyl peroxide, plus a noncomedogenic (read: won’t clog pores) moisturizer to keep skin soft. (Here are some tips on how to break bad habits that may be increasing your stress.)
STRESS SYMPTOM: DRYNESS
When that pesky hormone cortisol is present, your skin can’t hold onto water, which cases dryness and zaps your luminous glow. Fix it with hypoallergenic, fragrance-free products. These have a lower pH that prevents further dryness and inflammation. Wash your face with lukewarm water; hot temperatures strip skin’s oils. Then slather on your face cream while skin is still damp to lock in moisture (If it’s in the AM don’t forget to use one with an SPF of at least 15—even in winter.) (Here are fantastic ways to turn the clock back without overspending.)
STRESS SYMPTOM: TIRED EYES
When you’re stressed, you don’t sleep well—and if you’re hitting one too many holiday parties and downing a few extra cocktails you’re probably not getting the best sleep of your life. Cold cucumber slices are such a popular remedy because the chill constricts the blood and lymph vessels that bring fluid to the area (plus their round shape and size make this veggie particularly eye friendly). Another easy trick: Pile up some pillows and sleep with your head slightly elevated to prevent fluid from pooling. (Here are some great strategies on how to get the rest you need.)
Fifth World's Coral Reefs.
Posted by janean Friday, December 12, 2008 coral reef formation, fifth world's coral reefs, global coral reef monitoring network 0 comments »
An environmental management specialist of the Batangas city fisheries office inspects a coral reef formation in the Verde sea passage south of Manila, Philippines, February 2007. Almost a fifth of the planet's coral reefs have died and carbon emissions are largely to blame, according to an NGO study released Wednesday. The report, released by the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network, warned that on current trends, growing levels of greenhouse gases will destroy many of the remaining reefs over the next 20 to 40 years.
"If nothing is done to substantially cut emissions, we could effectively lose coral reefs as we know them, with major coral extinctions," said Clive Wilkinson, the organisation's coordinator.
The paper was issued on the sidelines of the December 1-12 negotiations on a new global treaty on climate change, taking place under the UN flag.
Half a billion people around the world depend on coral reefs for food and tourism, according to a common estimate.
Experts say the coral die-off has several causes, including local pollution, overfishing and invasive species.
But, they say, rising ocean temperatures caused by the greenhouse effect, and acidification, caused by the ocean's absorption of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere, are probably the biggest triggers.
"If nothing changes, we are looking at a doubling of atmospheric carbon dioxide in less than 50 years," said Carl Gustaf Lundin, head of the the global marine programme at the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, an umbrella network for more than a 1,000 NGOs and government groups.
"As this carbon is absorbed, the oceans will become more acidic, which is seriously damaging a wide range of marine life from corals to plankton communities and from lobsters to seagrasses."
Nearly half of global coral reefs are still healthy, but the overall downward trend shows no sign of stopping, the study found. It added, though, that the damage could be braked by strong conservation measures, such as properly policed marine parks.

Left marooned on the distant shores of Madagascar, the New Yorkers have hatched a plan so crazy it just might work. With military precision, the penguins have repaired an old crashed plane - sort of. Once aloft, this unlikely crew stays airborne just long enough to make it to the wildest place of all -- the vast plains of Africa itself -- where our zoo-raised crew encounters species of their own kind for the very first time. While discovering their roots, they quickly realize the differences between the concrete jungle and the heart of Africa. Despite long-lost relatives, romantic rivals and scheming hunters, Africa seems like a "crack-a-lackin" great place...but is it better than their Central Park home?Free Twilight Movie

e=mc2: Einstein's proven right
Posted by janean Friday, November 21, 2008 Blogging, e=c2, Einstein, news 4 comments »A brainpower consortium led by Laurent Lellouch of France's Centre for Theoretical Physics, using some of the world's mightiest supercomputers, have set down the calculations for estimating the mass of protons and neutrons, the particles at the nucleus of atoms.
According to the conventional model of particle physics, protons and neutrons comprise smaller particles known as quarks, which in turn are bound by gluons.
The odd thing is this: the mass of gluons is zero and the mass of quarks is only five percent. Where, therefore, is the missing 95 percent?
The answer, according to the study published in the US journal Science on Thursday, comes from the energy from the movements and interactions of quarks and gluons.
In other words, energy and mass are equivalent, as Einstein proposed in his Special Theory of Relativity in 1905.
The e=mc2 formula shows that mass can be converted into energy, and energy can be converted into mass.
By showing how much energy would be released if a certain amount of mass were to be converted into energy, the equation has been used many times, most famously as the inspirational basis for building atomic weapons.
But resolving e=mc2 at the scale of sub-atomic particles -- in equations called quantum chromodynamics -- has been fiendishly difficult.
"Until now, this has been a hypothesis," France's National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) said proudly in a press release.
"It has now been corroborated for the first time."
For those keen to know more: the computations involve "envisioning space and time as part of a four-dimensional crystal lattice, with discrete points spaced along columns and rows."
The Truth Behind Night Owls and Morning People
Posted by janean Tuesday, November 18, 2008 24-hour continuum, age, biology and behavior, body temperature, clock, datime, daylight hours, hormones, melatonin, morning people, nigght owls, sleep, sleep researchers, sleeping 2 comments »Get Up by Your Own CLOCK
As it turns out, our sleeping preferences weren’t just due to the fact that I responded better to the alarm. The circadian rhythm, a 24.1-hour period that dictates the sleep-wake cycle, differs among people and can influence whether we are a night owl or a morning lark.
Studies have indicated that self-described morning people have shorter circadian rhythms than self-identified night owls. This means that morning people sleep through their peak hour of sleepiness, so they wake up feeling refreshed. Evening types usually wake up right around their peak hour of sleepiness, so they may have high levels of melatonin and feel groggy. No wonder it’s tough to rouse them.
Hormones and body temperature also differ between the sleep groups. Early birds have higher levels of cortisol in the morning, which may give them the perky edge. Body temperature tends to be low in the morning, peaks in the late afternoon, and decreases until bedtime. Early risers have a body temperature peak around 3:30 p.m., while night owls are hottest around 8 p.m.
Our sleep preferences are at least in part hereditary. Differences in the CLOCK gene (short for Circadian Locomotor Output Cycles Kaput), for instance, may contribute to differences in our favored times of activity. Sleep researchers at Stanford University found that people with one genotype had an increased preference for eveningness, while the other genotype had an increased preference for morningness.
Biology and Behavior
Though our sleeping and waking preferences may be partially innate, some are due to what we’re used to from childhood, the seasons, or what we’ve adapted to. This means we can—and do—change our sleeping patterns.
For instance, during the summer, when daylight hours are plenty, we may stay up later but rise earlier with the sun. In the winter, darkness and cold sets in early, making our beds all that much more alluring. It’s also harder to wake early in the winter when it’s dark out.
Age also alters our sleeping patterns. Different times in our lives lend themselves to different sleeping patterns. During the teens, for instance, hormones may change the sleep and wake patterns, and this is one explanation as to why so many teens tend to shift to a night owl schedule. (Socializing, studying, and busy schedules also contribute.) Alternatively, as people get older, work and familial demands tend to make people more morning focused, regardless of their preferences. Later in life, in the sixties and seventies, people tend to need less sleep altogether.
In Sleep as in Life?
In reality, however, few of us are true morning people who can effortlessly bound out of bed at five or six in the morning; likewise die-hard night owls are also rare. Researchers estimate that extremes comprise about 10 to 20 percent of the population, with the rest of us falling somewhere on the intermediate spectrum. And in fact, the majority of us prefer a common point in the 24-hour continuum: daytime.

If you're unfamiliar with the devices, here's the pitch: You get a small, cheap laptop with a basic set of features, limited performance, and often a small hard drive (or an even smaller amount of flash storage). Some netbooks run Windows (usually XP), some don't. And that's the sell. The emphasis: cheap.

The Island Garden City of Samal
Posted by janean Tuesday, June 10, 2008 davao, history of samal, islamic tribal group, the island garden city of samal 1 comments »History of Samal
In the early Sp
anish regime, during the reign of Don Jose Uyanguren of Davao City ,
a certain Island within the DAVAO Gulf was named “ SAMAL” in recognition to the settlers who migrated from Jolo and Basilan called the “ ISLAMIC TRIBAL GROUP” or “ ISAMAL” . Most of the settlers lived along the coastal areas and only few in the hinter lands. Their daily primitive way of acquiring foods is through fishing, farming, and hunting within the vicinity.
The island was crea
ted into a municipality named as “ Municipality of Samal” and Barrio Peñaplata was the center for commercial economic and government operation. At that time , the municipal councilors of Samal found its concept of local autonomy and effective delivery of services. They therefore decided to create another municipality in order to be effective and autonomous in governance. Mayor Simplicio Obenza , Sr. made his iniative to the speedy creation of two municipalities. from official website of Islandgarden CityofSamal
: this month we will have adventure in the ISLAND.. with my friends and my brother ALLAN..
